Tencent Sues Sohu over Input Method

Legal Evening News, 5/26/10

Shenzhen-based internet company Tencent (0700.HK) has accused rival Sohu's (Nasdaq: SOHU) Sogou Pinyin input method editor (IME) of unfair competition, by creating an interface that leads users to delete their QQ Pinyin IME shortcut while preserving Sohu's own IME. Tencent also alleges that Sogou uses various means to alter language input settings to give priority to its own Pinyin IME.

Tencent has demanded that Sohu cease its acts of infringement, issue a public apology and pay RMB 20 mln in compensation. The Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court will begin hearing the case on May 27.
