LG, 6 Chinese TV Makers to Release New 3D TV Sets
Sohu IT, 12/17/10
LG Display recently revealed its new Film-type Patterned Retarder (FPR) 3D television display panels at a press event in China, and announced that it would partner with Chinese consumer electronics manufacturers Skyworth Digital Holdings (0751.HK), Konka (200016.SZ, 000016.SZ), Hisense (600060.SH), Haier, Changhong (600839.SH), and TCL (000100.SZ), as well as foreign brands, to release television sets based on the new technology.
LG Display CEO Young Soo Kwon said that FPR 3D technology offered more comfortable viewing and lighter glasses than competing technologies. The 3D glasses required by FPR displays are also cheaper to make than the shutter glasses required by competing technologies.
Chinese manufacturers involved, including Skyworth, Konka, and Hisense, said that they had already prepared devices using the displays, and would release FPR 3D LCD televisions by the end of the year or early next year. Skyworth VP Yang Dongwen predicted that the release of FPR 3D televisions would drive a sharp increase in the size of China's 3D LCD television market to more than 8 mln units in 2011.
LG Display's Kwon said that his company predicted total LCD TV demand of about 40 mln units in China next year, with 3D televisions accounting for 20% of that and FPR 3D displays accounting for 70% to 80% of 3D TV sets.
