CNTV Sues LeTV for Copyright Infringement

Beijing Evening News, 11/06/12

CCTV International Networks, the operator of CCTV's national online TV station CNTV, filed suit against Chinese online video site LeTV (300104.SZ) on November 5, alleging that LeTV made content from CCTV's popular documentary Shejian Shang de Zhongguo ("A Taste of China") available on its website without authorization, advertising the documentary in the header section of its Documentaries channel. CNTV is seeking RMB 800,000 in damages.

A representative for LeTV said the company had begun making the documentary available for viewing after LeTV staff approached CNTV about licensing the title. After learning that licensing talks had proven inconclusive, the representative said, LeTV removed the documentary, which was available on LeTV for roughly one week.

Both CNTV and LeTV have indicated that they will accept mediation in the case.
