Rumor: China's 2012 Domestic Internet TV STB Sales Under 4 Mln

China Business News, 11/27/12

An anonymous product manager at an unnamed Shenzhen set-top box (STB) manufacturer has estimated that domestic internet TV STB sales will reach approximately 3.8 mln in 2012, including 800,000 Android devices and 3 mln Linux terminals, lower than earlier industry expectations. Internet TV STB sales reached over 1 mln in 2011.

Internet TV STBs are currently priced too low, according to the manager, with prices averaging between RMB 300-500. Low-end devices cost as little as RMB 200, preventing internet TV license holders, content providers, and STB manufacturers achieving profitability.
