China Unicom to Invest RMB 15 Bln in Shanxi Smart Cities

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) and the provincial government of Shanxi recently signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Taiyuan to construct "Smart Shanxi" projects. Over the next three years, China Unicom will invest RMB 15 bln in the province to provide 100% fiber optic coverage in urban residences and commercial buildings, as well as fiber optic and 3G coverage for over 95% of government offices, 100% WLAN coverage in public areas and office buildings, and promote province-wide network integration, broadband, M2M, and smart city deployment.

According to the agreement, the Shanxi government and China Unicom will focus on eight key applications - government, finance, transportation, healthcare, security, energy, culture & education, and logistics - and accelerate construction of a "Smart Shanxi."
