China Telecom, Unicom Compete for iPhone 5 Pre-Orders

China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) began accepting iPhone 5 pre-orders at 9 AM on December 2, while China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) began accepting iPhone 5 pre-orders on December 3.
As of 5 PM December 2, Beijing Telecom had received over 5,000 pre-orders, while China Unicom's online service hall (www.10010.com) had received over 100,000 pre-orders as of 4 PM December 3, far exceeding first day pre-orders for the iPhone 4, which reached 50,000.
China Unicom and China Telecom are both accepting pre-orders via their respective online service centers and self-operated brick-and-mortar service halls as well as consumer electronics retailers Suning (002024.SZ) and Gome (0493.HK). Some China Unicom regional branches are also accepting pre-orders via e-commerce platforms TMall and Dangdang (NYSE: DANG).
China Unicom VP Li Gang reportedly met with Apple representatives in the United States on the afternoon of December 3 to discuss post-launch issues surrounding the iPhone 5, especially increasing supply volume.
