Orange, China Mobile Cooperate on SIM-based NFC Standards

Orange, 12/17/12

French telecommunications operator Orange and China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that aims to accelerate the commercialization of mobile contactless services by integrating standardized SIM card-based technical protocols into their respective services.

By adopting internationally recognized standards for embedding secure technical protocols directly into SIM-cards, the two operators hope to develop multi-operator compatible near-field communication (NFC) services.

The two operators believe that the future growth of NFC hinges upon global telecom operators adopting a common set of NFC standards that can function within a fully-interoperable business platform.
