Tencent Boosts O2O Services on Wechat

Tencent Tech, 9/24/13

Chinese internet and mobile services firm Tencent (0700.HK) has released an updated version of its "Wei Shenghuo" merchant service package, providing improved online to offline (O2O) services to public account operators on Tencent's WeChat (Weixin) mobile messaging application. The updated service has added mobile customer relationship management (CRM), customized public account menu, mobile customer service, and "WeChat Pay" third-party payment functionality to existing "Wei Shenghuo" service offerings. "Wei Shenghuo" now allows merchants to offer customers a complete range of services from product selection to final sale from within WeChat public accounts.

"Wei Shenghuo" allows merchants to record customer consumption habits, including purchase frequency and transaction amount. This information is then used to offer purchase suggestions to users according to recorded preferences. Tencent has also released a "Wei Shenghuo" WeChat public account. The account will aggregate WeChat public account coupons and allow users to access coupons through the "Wei Shenghuo" public account as opposed to individual merchant accounts.

"Wei Shenghuo" currently provides O2O services to brands and stores in 30 cities across China. 30 mln of the 50 mln total O2O coupons issued through WeChat public accounts have been activated, for a usage rate of around 60%. Tencent expects to expand "Wei Shenghuo" coverage to more than 40 cities across China by the end of this year, with customers to reach 80 mln.

Tencent will begin a nationwide promotional campaign for "Wei Shenghuo" in October in an attempt to attract more merchants to WeChat's public accounts platform. The company also plans to implement systems to allow merchants to license the management of their public accounts to third-party operators. Merchants opening WeChat public accounts thus far have employed a direct management model without full licensing functionality.
