Star Image Media Sues SMG for IPR Infringement

Tech.QQ.com, 11/14/07

Star Image Media has announced that it is suing the Shanghai Media Group (SMG), BesTV, and Hangzhou Shentong Investment Ltd. for IPR infringement. Star claims that the three companies broadcast its movie "Empire of the Wolves" to the public via IPTV without permission.

This is China's first domestic case raised over IPTV-related copyright infringement.

LENS: Star Image Media group (SIM) was founded in 1996, with headquarters in Beijing, and branch offices in Los Angeles and Singapore. It focuses predominantly on Mainland China distribution of imported films and TV programs, as well as overseas distribution for domestically made content. Its clients include cinema chains, CCTV, and various satellite and local TV channels.

Related lines of business include joint-production of films, home entertainment (i.e. DVD) copyright sales for foreign films, and content provision for new media such as DTV premium channels, IPTV, in-flight media, on-bus media, and railway media.
