China Bans Online Lottery Sales

XinhuaNews, 1/02/08

China's Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Civil Affairs, and General Administration of Sport co-released a notice today banning lottery sales agents from selling lottery tickets via the internet. The ban requires those who had started online sales or cooperated with other entities in online sales to stop immediately.

The notice is based on the "Temporary Regulation of Lottery Distribution and Sales".

Editor's Note: The regulation was issued in 2002 and clearly forbids online sales of lottery tickets. China's total sales of lottery tickets in 2007 exceeded RMB 100 bln, up over 20% YoY.
