Game Operators Lose Millions During Mourning Period

The Beijing News, 5/21/08

According to an employee with the gaming department of Chinese online media and gaming company Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU), a recent government-mandated 3-day suspension of all Chinese gaming operations will cost the company an estimated RMB 10 mln in income. The estimate was calculated based on figures in last quarter's financial statements. If ARPU figures are used, the loss will be several million RMB.

Xu Xiaohui, head of the marketing department for Chinese software developer and online gaming company Kingsoft (3888.HK), indicated that calculations based on financial statements put the company's loss at RMB 3 mln.

The 3-day suspension on gaming, applied to all online game operators, and various other forms of entertainment, running from May 19-21, was issued by the State Council in conjunction with an official 3-day period of national mourning for victims of the recent earthquake in south-west China.
