Operators to Start 3G Network Construction in 2008

Communications Weekly, 6/26/08

A figure connected with the telecom operators revealed at the 2008 Optical Telecommunications and Broadband Development Forum, held today at the Beijing Media Center, that China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK), China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) will start their construction of 3G carrier networks in the next half year, most likely in October. The networks will all use Multi-Service Transport Platform (MSTP) technology with embedded Ethernet over SDH (EOS) and PRP technology. They will develop to support packet transport network (PTN) technology after 2010.

Currently, China Mobile has already begun tests of PTN products. However PTN has not been completely standardized and the technology is 2 years away from maturity.
