Rumor: China Telecom to Start CDMA Network Bidding

CWW, 7/14/08

A source has revealed that China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) has essentially completed its survey of China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) CDMA finances, networks, and services. The company could sign an agreement with Unicom as soon as tomorrow. Any agreement would likely involve final arrangements for splitting off base stations, short-term network repair/maintenance, and the transfer of CDMA network staff.

The source also revealed that China Telecom could announce its first CDMA network bidding tomorrow. The bidding would be valued at around RMB 10 bln and would pertain to core networks, access networks, and the optimization and expansion of existing networks.
