China Telecom to Procure 5 mln CDMA Handsets

China Business News, 7/17/08

Multiple handset manufacturers have confirmed that China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) will procure 5 mln CDMA handsets. The majority of these will be positioned at the lower end of the price spectrum, in preparation for use by subscribers to China Telecom's PHS service that are expected to switch to China Telecom's CDMA network. A source at China Telecom revealed that the company is currently working on creating a brand name for the new phones, with Tianyi ("Heaven's Wing") and E-Hai ("E-Sea") being current contenders.

Editor's Note: Rumors yesterday suggested China Telecom planned to procure 10 mln CDMA handsets. See "China Telecom Invites Bids for 10 mln CDMA Handsets", MD 7/16/08 Issue.
