CNNIC: China's Internet User Base Reaches 253 Mln

The China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) released the 22nd Report on the State of the Chinese Internet in Beijing today. As of the end of June 2008, Chinese internet users numbered 253 mln, more than any other country in the world. China added 91 mln new internet users since this time last year, a period-on-period increase of 56.2%.Internet penetration reached 19.1%, with broadband internet access now reaching 214 mln subscribers - the second most of any country - accounting for 84.7% of total Internet users. Mobile internet users now number more than 73 mln.

China had 14.85 mln registered domain names as of June 2008, increasing by 61.8% YoY. As of July 22, there were nearly 12.2 mln .CN domain names registered.

To access the Internet, 87.3% of netizens use a desktop PC, 30.9% use a laptop, and 28.9% use a mobile phone. The number of computers (including both desktops and laptops) connected to the Internet in China has reached 84.7 mln, representing an increase of 6.7 mln since the end of 2007, or a semiannual growth rate of 8.6%.

As for location from which users get access to the Internet, 74.1% accessed from home, 39.2% accessed from Internet cafes, 22.7% accessed from work and 13.1% accessed from school.

Online music was used by 84.5% of Internet users, with 214 mln users, making it the most commonly used Internet service in China. Search engines had a penetration rate of 69.2% among users. China had 175.1 mln search engine users as of June, 2008. Online news had a penetration rate of 81.5%, with 206 mln users. Instant messaging had a penetration rate of 77.2%, with 195.4 mln users. Blog users reached 107.1 mln and a penetration rate of 42.3%. China had 147.5 mln online gamers as of June, 2008, with the penetration rate 58.3%. Online video users reached 179.7 mln, with a penetration rate of 71.0%. E-commerce users reached 63.3 mln, e-payment penetration rates reached 22.5% to 57.0 mln users. Online stock trading services recorded 59.3 mln users, accounting for 23.4% of all Internet users. 14.9% of users made use of Internet for job hunting and 18.5% for online education in H1 2008.

Chinese Internet users spend an average of 19 hours per week.
