Unicom to Collect WCDMA Technical Bids This Week

Marbridge Consulting, 10/05/08

In a telephone interview with Marbridge, one of 7 mobile network equipment vendors participating in China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) technical tender for WCDMA equipment revealed that all bids must be submitted by October 7. The current tender is focused strictly on the radio access portion of the network (i.e. node-B, radio network controller, and software licenses), with Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, Motorola, Nokia Siemens Networks, Samsung, and ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) all in the running.

At this stage, each vendor is required to submit a technical statement of compliance, an estimate of how much of their equipment would be required for each of five different model networks, and list pricing for each type of equipment.

Unicom is expected to provide the vendors with clarifications through October, followed by actionable bids as early as the first half of November.
