Operators Support WAPI in Wireless City Construction

Xinmin Evening News, 10/17/08

A recent report from the "Wireless City Operating Models" Seminar co-chaired by the Guangdong 3G Industry Development Alliance and the Hong Kong Wireless Development Center says that China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) are currently preparing large-scale Wi-Fi hotspot deployment, and are clearly stipulating that all access point (AP) bidding for contracts must be compatible with WAPI (WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure), China's home-grown wireless LAN standard.

In addition, Wi-Fi hotspots previously deployed by China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) will also be migrated to WAPI. Later this year, Intel will introduce a new mobile platform chip that will also support WAPI.
