Rumor: Hainan to Replace Shenzhen for Number Portability Trials

Tencent Tech, 11/14/08

A source has revealed that mobile number portability trials ordered by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) will be moved from Shenzhen in Guangdong province to Hainan Province. The MIIT has set up a dedicated working group for the network number portability project, and work on the trials is set to accelerate.

Hainan has adopted a one-way transfer method, meaning that China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) subscribers who switch to another operator can retain their existing mobile numbers. Subscribers transferring from other operators to China Mobile, however, will not have the option of retaining previous numbers.

Tianjin has adopted a two-way network transfer method allowing two-way number portability.

Editor's Note: In earlier reports it was revealed that the MIIT had been planning to begin trial work on number portability in Shenzhen and Tianjin. For more background, please see "Tianjin, Shenzhen to Run Number Portability Trials", MD 9/10/08 issue.
