ChinaByte, 11/17/08

Wuxi Unicom has set up 100 new WCDMA base stations, bringing basic coverage to the city. Testing and adjustments on the base stations are nearing the final phase, and the operator will begin test promotions of WCDMA service starting next month. A source related to the project revealed that in addition to trying to attract new users to the service, China Unicom users with phones that meet WCDMA technical requirements will be able to begin using the service simply by activating WCDMA, with no number or phone change required.

Editor's Note: China Unicom is launching WCDMA trial networks in 7 cities, of which Wuxi (Jiangsu province) is one. For more background, please see "Rumor: China Unicom Constructs WCDMA Networks in 7 Cities", MD 11/07/08 issue.
