China Mobile, Nokia to Sign 3G Handset Contract

Reuters, 11/18/08

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has announced that it will sign a contract with Finnish mobile phone vendor Nokia, under which Nokia will supply dual-mode GSM/TD-SCDMA handsets for the mainland Chinese market next year. China Mobile is also in talks with Motorola and Sony Ericsson on the same issue.

Editor's Note: Currently, Samsung and LG are the only foreign firms that have obtained Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) network access permits for TD-SCDMA handsets. Industry insiders believe that the lack of suitable handsets is one of the problems currently holding back the development TD-SCDMA.
