Guangdong Unicom Punishes SPs for Embedding Services

Guangdong Unicom issued a notice stating that in August, September, and October, 15 wireless value-added service providers (SPs) contracted with handset manufacturers for service embedding in handsets without the approval of China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH). Guangdong Unicom will fine these SPs 50% of their monthly earnings for breach of contract, and will issue a formal criticism. SPs at fault included A8 Digital Music (0800.HK), KongZhong (Nasdaq: KONG), and Tom Online.
