MIIT, NDRC Abolish Inter-network SMS Price Discrepancies

CWW, 12/03/08

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the Chinese National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) jointly issued the 'Notice of Cancellation of Price Discrepancies Between Intra-network and Inter-network SMS Charges."

Starting December 1, telecommunications companies at all levels are to cease introduction of price plans that set different prices for intra- and inter-network SMS messages. Beginning January 1, 2009, existing plans with price discrepancies for SMS messages are to cease taking on new subscribers. Telecommunications companies will be required to actively "clean up" all plans with price discrepancies, and to report the results of their findings and their plans to deal with the matter to the MIIT by January 15.
