Youku Blocks Search Engines

Wabei.com, 12/17/08

According to an industry source, video-sharing platform Youku has officially blocked Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) and Google video searches from accessing its website, a decision reportedly made by Youku in an effort to reduce bandwidth costs. A search on Baidu Video reveals that Youku videos are already unavailable on the search engine.

According to website traffic analysis provided by Baidu, 30% to 40% of total traffic to video-sharing websites such as Youku originates from Baidu's video search. The current move by Youku is expected to reduce traffic to the site by at least 30%, meaning the cost to advertise on the site is also likely to drop. Bandwidth expenditures currently account for 50% of Youku's annual operating expenses.
