MIIT Prohibits New PHS Subscriptions

MIIT, 2/13/09

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has confirmed earlier reports that it would require the 1900-1920MHz wireless spectrum, currently used by PHS, to be cleared before the end of 2011 to ensure it does not interfere with the TD-SCDMA system to be launched using the neighboring 1880-1900MHz frequency. According to the notice, PHS handset frequencies will be completely reclaimed, with operators now no longer permitted to accept new PHS subscribers. In addition, the MIIT has asked both China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) to draft a network exit strategy for PHS users.
