Rumor: Hitachi to Lay Off 2,000 in China

Sohu IT, 3/02/09

According to Hong Kong media reports, a source has stated that Japanese consumer electronics and home appliance manufacturer Hitachi plans layoffs for its mainland China television business. All of its provincial branch companies and marketing teams will see cuts and the company's Fujian production base is also likely to be downsized, with 2,000 employees expected to be cut. The restructuring plans have been sent to Hitachi's Japanese headquarters for approval.

Hitachi manages over 100 wholly or partially owned projects in China, including its television business Hitachi (China) Digital Image Group, and employs over 60,000 people. Hitachi (China) Digital Image Group recorded significant losses in 2008, selling 300,000 flat screen televisions, accounting for 1% of mainland China's total television sales.
