Rumor: MIIT Restricts China Unicom Fixed-line Business Scope

An industry source reports that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) issued a notice regarding "Work following the issuance of 3G licenses" on March 12 which clearly delineated the scope of operations for the three major telecom operators. China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) received permission to operate all services nationwide, while China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) fixed-line service will be limited to the ten northern provinces as well as Sichuan and Chongqing in the south.
