Rumor: Taobao to Launch "Virtual Item Trade Platform"

An industry source has revealed that B2C and C2C e-commerce site Taobao will release a transaction platform for virtual items in June. Specifics as to the model to be adopted by the virtual item transaction platform have yet to be determined, but one rumor says Taobao is in touch with a gaming company and plans for cooperation with a number of companies through an open platform.

An industry insider said that sales of virtual items totaled in the billions of RMB in China last year, with Taobao leading the rankings in each category of transaction.
