Alipay to Launch Mobile Payment Service

DigiTimes, 4/29/09

A recent job posting by third-party payment platform Alipay listed positions for several "wireless R&D engineers" and "mobile phone software engineers." Alipay VP for planning Qiu Changheng revealed that the company was preparing to move into the mobile internet market.

A report from Alipay's Hangzhou headquarters revealed that the payment processor will work with Zhejiang Mobile to serve as one of the chief payment platforms for Zhejiang Mobile's stores and to allow mobile customers to purchase phone numbers, subscription plans, and new mobile phones, among other services.

At the same time, the percentage of Alipay transactions coming from the online B2C and C2C platform Taobao – previously 90% -- dropped to around 50%. In order to seek genuine independence from its sibling company, Alipay is seeking out new "developing markets" – such as airline services, travel services, manufacturing, and mobile payment.
