Yahoo Launches R&D Center in Beijing

Tencent Tech, 5/19/09

Internet search firm Yahoo has quietly established a global software R&D center in Beijing, and will make an official announcement regarding the center in June. The R&D center is unrelated to China Yahoo, which is owned and operated by e-commerce firm Alibaba Group. Ari Balogh, Yahoo global executive vice president and CTO, and Yahoo Beijing global R&D center general manager Zhang Chen are both expected to attend the opening ceremony.

This is Yahoo's second entry into the Chinese market. Four years ago, Yahoo purchased a 39% share in Alibaba Group in exchange for USD 1 bln in cash and all of China Yahoo's assets. Edelman Public Relations, the company responsible for PR at Yahoo Global's R&D Center, is not the public relations organization for Alibaba or China Yahoo.
