Shanghai Telecom Launches Mobile Payment Services

Oriental Morning Post, 5/27/09

Shanghai Telecom released an E-Surfing 3G mobile payment service yesterday. Two of the core functionalities of the service – mobile ordering and mobile payment – went live as of the announcement. Mobile ordering refers to using SMS messages, web access, or WAP to make an appointment at a medical clinic or purchase electronic movie tickets; the cost of this will be automatically added to the subscriber's Shanghai Telecom bill. Mobile payment refers to the use of existing Shanghai FFT (Fu Fei Tong) payment cards or FFT accounts to pay Shanghai Telecom bills, public utilities bills, and mobile phone balance recharging.

At the end of Q3 this year, Shanghai Telecom will release a mobile shopping service allowing subscribers to use their phones to pay at POS terminals in supermarkets, convenience stores, and shopping malls.
