Rumor: Unicom to Issue 3G Numbers in June

An informed source has revealed that thanks to China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) strategy of synchronized first- and second-phase construction, progress on the second phase of the operator's WCDMA network construction efforts has been swift, with the first round of base station optimization already complete in some cities. Among the 229 second-phase cities in which China Unicom had initially planned a September release of WCDMA numbers, half will begin issuing numbers at the end of June.
