Ericsson Signs USD 1.7 Bln in Contracts with China Mobile, Unicom

Chinese telecom operators China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) have both signed framework agreements with Swedish telecom equipment vendor Ericsson for 2G/3G mobile communication equipment and related services, worth USD 1 bln and USD 700 mlnl, respectively. Ericsson will upgrade the operators' 2G networks and help build their 3G networks.
Ericsson will provide China Mobile with green solutions to optimize its network's energy usage and meet emission reduction targets, as well as expanding GSM/GPRS coverage and capacity in 18 provinces and providing TD-SCDMA products.
China Unicom has signed Ericsson to become the primary supplier for the operator's GSM network upgrades in ten provinces, as well as providing GSM/WCDMA core networks and/or wireless access systems in 15 provinces with transmission, IP and value-added services platforms.
