8D World Secures USD 7 Mln First-Round Funding

Massachusetts-based, China market-focused virtual world creator 8D World announced today that it had received USD 7 mln in first-round funding from Spark Capital and Gobi Partners.

In May 2009, 8D World released Wiz World Online, a virtual world designed for global English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) learners to improve their spoken English. Wiz World Online was first released in Chinese to the general public and, according to the company, has attracted a rapidly growing user base while partnering with hundreds of public and private schools in China.

In July, 8D World is working with six Shanghai government agencies and Shanghai Oriental Digital Community to launch the Wiz World Cup oral English competition in anticipation of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
