CICC: iPhone to Enter China in September

Communications Weekly, 7/21/09

Investment bank China International Capital Corporation (CICC) recently published a report that said, "There is essentially no longer any doubt regarding China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) introduction of the iPhone to China, with the actual date likely set in late September, at which time, Unicom will officially launch its WCDMA 3G service across 280 cities." CICC believes that Unicom will not publicly announce its cooperation with Apple too early before the iPhone's release, as the Chinese government wishes for Unicom to remain quiet on the matter, to allow TD-SCDMA more time to develop, and to avoid having users originally intending to participate in the WCDMA test operation decide instead to simply wait for the iPhone. At present, development on the WCDMA network already offers 90% outdoor coverage in cities and towns, while indoor coverage is only at 30%.
