China Mobile, Starbucks Cooperate on WLAN Services

Netease Tech, 8/06/09

Shanghai Mobile and Zhejiang Mobile have announced they will provide WLAN wireless internet service to Starbucks outlets in Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shanghai. Deputy general manager of Shanghai Mobile, Nie Jing, revealed that it will also launch mobile phone contactless payment service in Starbucks before the end of the year, allowing customers to swipe their phones for coffee purchases. Starbucks currently has approximately 120 locations in Shanghai, and around 40 in Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Nie said that 80% of those Starbucks locations already offer access to China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) wireless network, and that network deployment would be complete throughout the eastern China region by the end of the year. China Mobile is currently in negotiations with Starbucks China headquarters to make wireless networks available in Starbucks stores nationwide.
