Datang Telecom Terminal to Release TD-SCDMA E-Reader

The first TD-SCDMA e-reader will hit the market in mid-September, confirmed a source at Datang Telecom (Tianjin) Terminal Manufacturing Company. The e-reader will support high-speed connections to a content platform on both TD-SCDMA and GSM networks for downloading and updating reading materials. Datang Telecom Terminal VP Yang Yong said the e-reader will be available not only from China Mobile's self-owned and partner retail outlets but from 3C department stores as well, and may also expand to online and TV shopping sales channels. In addition, discussions are already underway to sell the device in Xinhua bookstores. China Mobile expects to offer a subsidy towards purchase of the e-reader. Yang further revealed that initial prices will be around RMB 3,000 - 4,000, to be followed later by the release of a lower-priced model. Datang Telecom Terminal is currently researching and developing a color display model, which Yang said still has some technical kinks to work out but is tentatively expected to be released in 2011.
