Rumor: Unicom to Unveil iPhone Models Tomorrow

Sina Tech, 8/27/09

An authoritative industry source has revealed that China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) will publicly unveil the iPhone in China tomorrow. The source said that while Unicom is set to release information about the iPhone tomorrow afternoon, it could not yet be confirmed whether or not Unicom had signed a contract with Apple. The models to be made public tomorrow are likely 3G editions (both 8GB and 16GB editions), while the newer iPhone 3GS will likely be unveiled later. The source said the phones are unlikely to begin sales until after September.

Editor's Note: According to Netease Tech, a source inside Guangdong Unicom revealed that a price had been set for the Unicom edition of the iPhone 3G, with 8GB models retailing for RMB 2,500. However, subscribers must sign a two-year contract, with an RMB 186 monthly minimum, equivalent to Unicom's lowest currently available 3G package.
