China Telecom Sells 13 Mln CDMA Handsets in H1 2009

Ma Wu, deputy general manager of China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) terminal procurement subsidiary Tianyi Telecom Terminal, has divulged that CDMA handset sales volume reached 13 mln in H1 2009, up 345% YoY. Handsets were procured from over 160 manufacturers.

Assistant to the general manager He Ning said that in the Jan-Jun period, domestic CDMA handset sales volume had a growth rate over 200%, while GSM product sales volume dropped to 9.2 mln, with growth slowing to 10%. The number of new GSM subscribers has dropped continuously over the past six months, down 11% in July over the previous month. New CDMA subscribers now account for 32% of all new subscribers in China.
