Rumor: China Mobile to Drop Netbook Business

DoNews, 9/07/09

According to a reliable industry source, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) will hold an internal meeting next week to discuss abandoning its netbook business.

The source said that China Mobile is considering dropping the business due to poorer than expected results. After pursuing the netbook business for a considerable period of time, China Mobile has found netbooks unable to meet its expectations in garnering a significant user base, despite China Mobile's massive outlays in subsidies, as well as significant drain on the company's manpower and resources. The source asserted that China Mobile will therefore exit the netbook market, seeking more suitable means to promote its 3G data cards.
