Rumor: China Mobile to Shift Emphasis from 3G Netbooks to Handsets

Tencent Tech, 9/09/09

Inside sources say that certain senior management figures at China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) have pushed for a shift in the company's 3G terminal strategy from netbooks and data cards to TD-SCDMA handsets. Proponents have emphasized the need to develop TD-SCDMA handsets in H2 2009 as the next step in the company's 3G terminal plans, while de-emphasizing netbooks.

An industry source said China Mobile has already instructed provincial operators to offer subsidies for 3G handsets and eliminate those for 2G handsets.
