SARFT to Begin 2nd Round Satellite TV STB Bidding in October

Shanghai Securities News, 9/09/09

Wang Xiaojie, head of the Department of Science and Technology at China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT), has revealed that RMB 1.8 bln has been allocated for SARFT's second round of bidding for direct broadcast satellite (DBS) TV receivers. 24 vendors will participate, including set-top box (STB) manufacturer Coship (002052.SZ) and digital TV equipment manufacturer Hisense (600060.SH).

According to Wang, relevant departments and bidding vendors will complete technical preparations and product testing in September, and SARFT plans to open up bidding in October. In addition to an allocation of RMB 1.8 bln in funds from China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), Wang said that individual provincial and municipal bureaus will also allocate funds for a series of additional bidding.

Editor's Note: SARFT originally scheduled the second round of procurement for the Cuncuntong rural DBS project for July, but postponed the bidding due to divisions in the industry over free channels.
