Rumor: China Mobile to Launch "CMRead" Mobile Reader

CWW Net, 9/11/09

Chinese IT site CCW has reported receiving an internal installation package for a new "CMRead" mobile phone e-reading product from China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK). According to the report, the product's website has entered internal testing. The report said that China Mobile will waive data fees for handset models from over 10 major brands currently supported by the product. The service will offer comics, books, and magazines, while featuring functions such as a "bookshelf," bookmarks, downloads, and top lists. However, the comic and magazine sections are still being developed and were not yet available for test use. Cooperating content providers include large publishers and other online literature sites.

China Mobile will offer two payment modes: per item or per month. Monthly subscriptions will include RMB 2 and RMB 5 plans, with the RMB 2 plan being limited only to a selected set of reading materials, while the RMB 5 plan will have access to 5 channels: women's fashion, fantasy, latest releases, modern romance, and military and history.
