Rumor: GAPP to Penalize Netease

Sohu IT, 9/22/09

After contacting a number of parties, Sohu IT has learned that China's General Administration of Press and Publications (GAPP) is looking into its options for punishment of Chinese online game operator Netease (Nasdaq: NTES) for unauthorized resumption of World of Warcraft (WoW) game operations. GAPP's plan of action against Netease is expected to be announced soon.

An informed source revealed that as the matter involves a number of parties, GAPP and the Ministry of Culture (MoC) are in discussion regarding plans of action and enforcement. A source involved with the MoC, however, claimed to be unaware of any such talks.

Another source said that GAPP maintains that approval for operation of WoW lies within its jurisdiction, and that its investigation of the JV founded by Netease and WoW developer Blizzard remains at an impasse.
