China Unicom to Unify WCDMA Handset Distribution

DoNews, 9/29/09

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has revealed that it will adopt a completely "market-based" system for WCDMA handset sales, with all WCDMA handsets to be distributed by China Postel Mobile Communications Co., Shenzhen Telling Communications Corporation, Shenzhen Aisidi, and Unicom's subsidiary Huasheng, for retail sale through Unicom's service centers and other retail channels, under unified pricing and promotional policies. Unicom Huasheng plans to cooperate on more than 15 handsets this year, with total sales expected to top 1 mln units. The highest-priced product currently confirmed for sale is the Apple iPhone; the lowest-priced is the ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) F106, which will retail for less than RMB 1,000.

Unicom stressed that no subsidiary would be permitted to procure handsets on its own authority.
