C114, 10/30/09
According to an industry source, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has submitted its 2010 development plan to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). According to the plan, China Mobile intends to add 30 mln TD-SCDMA subscribers next year.
The source said that this number could still be revised upward. China Mobile is still in the process of estimating demand for the service, and a final plan should be complete by the middle of November, at which point it will be distributed to individual provincial level subsidiaries.
According to the source, at least two-thirds of the 30 mln TD-SCDMA subscribers will be mobile phone subscribers, with the remainder either data card or wireless wireline subscribers. The source indicated that in 2010 the demand for fixed TD-SCDMA phones could reach as high as 5 mln handsets. Provincial subsidiaries are inviting bids for TD-SCDMA fixed phones in more than 20 provinces and regions, including Shanghai, Henan, Liaoning, Shandong, Hunan, Sichuan, Guangdong, and Fujian.
