MIIT to Establish Standards for Mobile Internet Filtering

National Business Daily, 11/26/09

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has revealed that it will establish standards for "green" internet filtering technology, and that mobile operators will be required to filter pornographic material from mobile websites. Establishing responsibility for linking to content from mobile websites is one of the major focuses of these standards. Specific conditions include: 1) according to relevant regulations, mobile website operators cannot link to websites without an ICP registration; 2) all linked websites much sign an information security management agreement; 3) the linking party must, upon notification from relevant authorities, remove links to websites that violate regulations; 4) the linking party must regularly check linked websites' content, and immediately report any problems discovered.

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has revealed that it is already planning to re-sign information security agreements with all of its media partners, and will not cooperate with those whose content management abilities are not up to par.
