Hearings of the first batch of copyright infringement cases filed against Chinese video sharing website Youku by the China Internet Video Anti-Piracy Alliance began on November 26. According to Zhu Jiang, assistant to Youku's CEO, the intellectual property division of the Beijing Haidian District People's Court ruled that Youku had infringed on copyrights, ordering Youku to pay RMB 450,000 in damages. Youku has responded that it remains unconvinced that Chinese VOD provider Voole has the authority to bring copyright infringement suits against Youku, and will appeal the decision to the Beijing No.1 Intermediate People's Court.
