China's MOC to Tighten Online Game Regulation

Xinhuanet, 11/28/09

China's Ministry of Culture (MoC) has said that it will step up oversight of online games and management of internet cafes during a two- to three-month period starting between the New Year and Chinese New Year (February 14, 2010), as it further tightens review of cultural products and steps up its operator oversight mechanisms to improve regulation of the cultural market.

Gaming companies will be required to set up dedicated in-house content review divisions staffed with employees trained and certified by the MoC. Provincial-level bureaus of culture will be responsible for online "patrols" and inspections of content operated by gaming companies within their jurisdiction, and to shut down illegal online games. Regulations being drafted for online game management provide cultural enforcement authorities at all levels of government with legal backing and means of enforcement.
