China Unicom Joins Mobile Porn Crackdown

Beijing Morning Post, 12/04/09

In the footsteps of China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) crackdown on pornography on the mobile Internet, China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has issued a "military order" to keep drug- and sex-related content off WAP sites.

Unicom kicked off the campaign together with 15 WAP site operators, including the People's Daily Online, Sina (Nasdaq: SINA), Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU), Netease (Nasdaq: NTES), and Tencent (0700.HK), who have made a public pledge to keep away from prohibited content. In addition, Unicom announced that, starting December 6, it will suspend its services for other operators who have not made such a pledge.

China Unicom has said that if at any time it discovers a WAP site providing material that is not in accordance with its public pledge, it will immediately take the website down, cancel all business agreements with that WAP site, and alert the proper authorities.
