Top100: Google.cn Music Search Ads to Bring in USD 10 Mln
Sina Tech, 12/14/09
CEO Gary Chen (Chen Ge) of Chinese music site Top100.cn said that within the next three years, Google China's music search will bring in more than USD 10 mln annually from advertising revenues. When asked about rumors that Google is preparing to develop its competing Google Music service in China, Chen said he didn't expect Google.cn's music search to be affected. Chen also said that Top100 is working on cooperation with social networking sites (SNS), microblogging platforms, and community websites, expanding upon its existing partnership with Google.
Chen added that the number of Top100 users had been growing steadily, and that the company expects the number of downloads per day to reach 10 mln by next June. Reports last month said Top100 had signed RMB 2.5 mln worth of deals with five advertisers including Nokia, Apple, and Volkswagen. Chen revealed that Top100 had actually signed deals with seven brands over the past two months, and is in talks with other potential advertisers as well.
Editor's Note: Earlier reports said that Top100's partnership with Google.cn had stalled over conflicts between Google.cn's ad revenue-sharing model (under which it shares profits with Top100) and Google Music's per-song sales revenue-sharing model. Both Chen and Google China have denied the rumors.
